Oregon's Most Prominent and Isolated Peaks

Mount Hood from Cloud Cap Campground

Mount Hood from Cloud Cap Campground

The topographic prominence of a peak is the height of the peak's summit as the vertical distance between it and the lowest contour line encircling it but containing no higher summit within it. It is a measure of the independence of a peak.

The topographic isolation of a peak is the minimum great-circle distance from the peak's summit to a point of equal elevation. Topographic isolation represents a radius of dominance in which the peak is the highest point.

This page lists the 100 most prominent peaks in Oregon and the 27 peaks in Oregon with at least 25 miles of isolation. The combined list is ranked by prominence, and only three of the most isolated peaks are not also the most prominent.

This list has much more coverage of Oregon than does the Oregon's Highest Peaks list. Hiking these peaks has taken me to regions of Oregon that had not previously interested me as a climber, and has been a fun way for me to get to know Oregon better than before.
